Proper Use of Acrel Current Transformers

Why Use Acrel Current Transformers

If a workplace has several thick cables, and we only know that a large current is passing through them, but we want to know the exact value of the current, the first thought that comes to mind is to disconnect the cables and connect a meter in series. However, we know the thicker the wire, the larger the current, and handling thicker wires is more difficult and dangerous. Additionally, direct connection requires a large gauge meter, which is hard to find. In this case, we need to learn how to use Acrel Current Transformers.

Introduction to Acrel Current Transformers

What is a current transformer? A current transformer is actually a current conversion device (CT). Their main function is to induce small currents from the large current passing through the cable according to a certain ratio, for measurement purposes. Electrical equipment and transmission lines often carry high currents ranging from hundreds to thousands of amps. However, the meters we use can only measure tens of amps at most, which does not match the current of electrical equipment. Acrel Current Transformers convert large currents into small currents, to achieve matching, and ensure the safety of detection and metering personnel.

Usage of Acrel Current Transformers

Once we select the appropriate current transformer, we need to pass the cable, Acrel Current Transformer's primary current through the P1 terminal enters, and exits through the P2 terminal. The wire on the P1 side is connected to the power side, while the wire on the P-2 side is connected to the load side. Some measuring equipment requires the polarity or direction of the current, such as an energy meter, so ensuring the correct direction is important. As per the specifications, if the power is starting from the top, P1 should be facing up, and P-2 should be facing down. If the power is starting from the bottom, then during installation, P1 should face down, and P2 should face up. In this way, Acrel Current Transformer will generate current from the cable. The secondary current flowing out from the S1 terminal enters the positive terminal of the ammeter, and after exiting the negative terminal of the ammeter, it flows into Acrel Current Transformer's terminal S2. In principle, the S2 terminal should be grounded. Some current transformers are marked with the primary nominal: L1, L2; secondary nominal: K1, K2.
